Surveyor v landing: the effect of slope on bearing capacity.

چکیده
Differences in latency to the air from the same rat when stressed and unstressed were comparable to differences found when one rat was stressed and another unstressed. This observation would also suggest that the discriminable odor did not derive from a chronic stress state, but arose immediately from a given stressing. Neither can the discrimination be reasonably attributed to greater familiarity with odors of the unstressed rats as a group. Air sampled from unstressed animals not previously used did not produce the long latencies associated with S-air. The possibility that a cue might derive from the living cages from which the stimulus air was sampled, was tested by placing Uand Sstimulus rats in completely new cages ^ for 30 of the 100 test trials. Results were indistinguishable from those obtained when air samples were taken from the living cages. The major finding of this paper that rats can respond differentially to odors of stressed and unstressed rats suggests the need for instituting experimental controls in those studies in which odor from a stressed animal might affect behavior of nearby animals. Previously such controls were not thought necessary. We are presently seeking to locate -the odor source in the animal's body to assist us in determining whether the material has pheromonal activity and in its eventual chemical analysis. JoHN G. Bearing Capacity of Triangular Shell Foundations Adjacent to the Reinforced Sandy Slopes
This paper investigates response of triangular shell strip footings situated on the sandy slope. A series of reduced-scale plate load tests were conducted to cover different parameters including three shell footing types with different apex angles in addition to a flat footing, four different distances for strip footings from the crest of the slope namely “edge distance” and reinforcement statu...
متن کاملSeismic Bearing Capacity of Strip Footings on Pile-Stabilized Slopes
This paper develops an analytical method to calculate seismic bearing capacity of a strip footing, which is located on a slope reinforced with rows of pile. The resistance of passive pile is determined based on normal and shear stress of the soil around the pile, which is then compared to other analytical methods. This comparison indicates an acceptable agreement. The variants of the study incl...
متن کاملStabilization of Earth Slope by Waste Tire using Experimental Tests and PIV
ABSTRACT The issue of environmental protection has led researchers to pay serious attention to waste tires. Civil engineers have found that waste tires can increase bearing capacity, earth slope stability, and other useful applications in civil engineering. In this paper, a series of experimental modeling have been performed to investigate the effect of waste tires on increasing the stabi...
متن کاملAn experimental and numerical study on the bearing capacity of circular and ring footings on rehabilitated sand slopes with geogrid
This paper presents the results of a series of small-scale model tests and numerical analyses conducted on circular and ring model footings located near geogrid reinforced sand slopes. Layers of geogrid were used as reinforcement. For numerical analyses Finite Element Method (FEM) was used. The effects of reinforcement depth, size, number of layers, and the horizontal distance between reinforce...
متن کاملPrincipal Scientific Results of the Surveyor 3 Mission
The fine lunar surface material at the Surveyor 3 landing site has about 3 X 108-dyne/cm 2 cohesion, 35 ø angle of internal friction, 3 X 105-dyne/cm ' static bearing capacity. A small rock withstood a local pressure of 2 X 107 dynes/cm -ø. Soil strength and density increase significantly at depths of a few centimeters. Exposed surface has a considerably higher albedo than the material just bel...
متن کاملضریب اطمینان در تحلیل پایداری شیروانیها تحت اثر بار متمرکز
In this paper, stability of slopes with a shallow foundation located on top including the shape of the failure mechanism is investigated in static and seismic states. This is a three dimensional problem which is analyzed two dimensionally because 3D analyses are complex and appropriate softwares are not available. The conventional method of bearing capacity evaluation of foundations on top of ...
